Background of the study:
Poverty is widely recognized as a significant factor contributing to criminal behavior, particularly property crimes such as burglary. In Ugep Local Government Area, Cross River State, economic deprivation has been linked to an increased incidence of burglary, as residents struggling to meet basic needs may resort to criminal means (Akanbi, 2023). The socio-economic challenges in Ugep, including limited employment opportunities and inadequate social support, have created an environment in which burglary is seen as a means of survival (Chinwe, 2024). Studies indicate that areas with high poverty levels tend to experience higher rates of property crimes, as economic stressors diminish the perceived risks associated with such offenses (Akanbi, 2023). Furthermore, the lack of effective community policing and social interventions exacerbates the situation, making poverty both a cause and a consequence of burglary incidents (Chinwe, 2024). This study will investigate the extent to which poverty impacts burglary incidents in Ugep, providing insights into the underlying socio-economic dynamics and identifying potential avenues for intervention (Akanbi, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
In Ugep Local Government Area, poverty is increasingly being recognized as a key factor in the rise of burglary incidents (Chinwe, 2024). The financial hardships experienced by many residents create conditions where burglary is perceived as a viable means of alleviating economic stress. Despite efforts by local authorities to curb property crimes, the persistent issue of poverty remains unaddressed, thereby perpetuating the cycle of criminal behavior (Akanbi, 2023). This study seeks to explore the extent of this relationship and to identify measures that can effectively reduce burglary by addressing its root socio-economic causes (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of poverty in Ugep Local Government Area.

  2. To examine the relationship between poverty and burglary incidents.

  3. To propose interventions to reduce burglary through poverty alleviation.

Research questions:

  1. What is the relationship between poverty and burglary in Ugep?

  2. How does economic deprivation influence burglary rates?

  3. What interventions can mitigate burglary by addressing poverty?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Poverty is significantly associated with increased burglary incidents.

  2. Economic deprivation directly influences the rate of burglary.

  3. Poverty alleviation measures can effectively reduce burglary occurrences.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it investigates the critical link between poverty and burglary, offering insights for policymakers and community leaders to design targeted interventions. By addressing the socio-economic underpinnings of burglary, the findings will contribute to improved community safety and sustainable development in Ugep (Akanbi, 2023; Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating the impact of poverty on burglary incidents in Ugep Local Government Area, Cross River State. It focuses solely on the socio-economic determinants of burglary.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Poverty: A state in which individuals lack sufficient resources to meet their basic needs.

  2. Burglary: The unlawful entry into a building with the intent to commit a crime, typically theft.

  3. Economic deprivation: The absence of financial resources and opportunities required for a stable livelihood.
